: : we ate staying at the Americann Feista in Feb. for our 1st time, Should we stay all-inclusive or not???I do like to try other resturants. How expensive are drinks at the resort??? THANKS

: Sandy,
: Pretty much all of Cozumel is "expensive". Beer is $2-3. drinks are$3-5. Average meal is 8-$25. $25 gets you a very nice lobster. I did not go inclusive and it was pretty $$$ but I ate well. I heard the food at Fiesta is a 4 on 1-10. It is buffet stuff. It is probably OK but you will get sick of it after 3 days.

My first trip to Cozumel was all inclusive at Fiesta Americana. To be perfectly honest, I was really afraid of getting sick and venturing out. So we did the AI thing. At Fiesta Americana, it is not all buffet like at some of the other AI places. They have three restaurants and you can eat at any of them at any time they are open. There are two open at every meal. If there is a buffet set up...and the Reef always has a breakfast/brunch buffet available and the Tropical Forest sometimes does...you can still order from the menu. I thought the breakfast buffet was totally awesome. There was something for every palate. You could eat a wide variety without ever eating American food...or without ever eating Mexican food. It was great. I tried some awesome things...fried bananas, fried pineapple, cilantro soup, lime soup, tamales in banana leaves...but there were always things like omelettes, eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries, Frosted Flakes (make that Zucaretas) with Tony the Tiger on the box and even Special K. Their mandarin orange juice was to die for.

They had a great feria on Thursday night with Mexican buffet and a professional dance troupe. They had a steak and chop buffet, and a fajita buffet. I avoided Italian night. Everything I ate there was good. Al got one meal in the Miramar that he didn't like. He didn't say anything, just didn't eat. So we went down to the Tropical forest and he got fajitas while I had a sundae...no problemo.

You have to sign for the meals and I got to see what they would have cost had I NOT been all inclusive...not a pretty picture. It was more than would have kept me happy.

I am now into the bed and breakfast scene...Alicia's to be exact. I like eating in the local restaurants and I usually eat for $5.00 $10.00 per person... but that's usually drinking pop or one beer each. I would recommend El Moro, Los Moros del Moritos, Casa Denis, Villa del Dorados, Abuelo Gerardo, and I really enjoyed the personal pizzas at Prima's. Those are all within walking distance of the main square except for the first two...for those, take a cab. Oh yeah, and I really enjoyed Costa Brava, but I think that was our lobster/shrimp night and so we had to pay more. Still it was very good. We even ordered a large pepperoni pizza from Nino's and it was delivered for under $6.00. It was good, but I've had better. Just couldn't kick on the price.

So it can be done without re-financing the house. If you choose to stay at Fiesta Americana, but not go AI, the cab fare into town is 47 pesos, or about $5.00. Day trips often include a lunch. We ate twice a day because we didn't want to spend that much time tied down to a table. (That reminds me, you can order nacho's and stuff at the beach...we did that once.) If you walk down to Dzul Ha beach club, you can get a reasonably priced lunch and great service. I ate lunch there 5 or 6 times last summer. My day at Dzul Ha (10-6) usually cost me $11.00 plus tip. That was lunch, one drink, and a couple of pops for the day. And that's walking distance from Fiesta Americana.
