My husband & I went last October and it weas great. We were staying in Akumal. Neither one of us wanted to take the tour bus since it gets there during the heat of the day, so we hired a taxi driver to take us. We asked around and found a guy (Hector) to take us and another couple for $100. He was our personal driver all day. We got to Chichen Itza right when it opened at 9am and were pretty much done by 1pm. By that time all of the tour busses had arrived and it was a ZOO. It was also HOT HOT HOT. It was so nice to be there for those 3 hours with only a hanfull of people. Ask around for a taxi driver in Plya Del Carman to take you. Better than the bus!
Other option would be to go and stay one night in Piste` at one of the hotels there.There are several to choose from from high $$$ to low.
