I don't know the cost to ferry a car to the island, but I would think it would be cheaper to take the bus to Playa and the ferry to Cozumel where you can rent a different car.

I know there is a ferry at Punta Moreles...Puerto Moreles...something like that. I forget. They ferry huge trucks to the island. Don't know how often they cross, but I've seen the trucks lined up on a side street waiting to be loaded on the ferry in the morning.

You can take a cab from Cancun to Playa del Carmen for $58. The bus is cheaper, but the cab is more direct.
